Vargan is an "IN'"-type of the instrument
Shamnism has the same background with different tribes in the different corners of the world. This was noticed by the anthropologists in the 1950s. Michael Harner was the first who wrote a lot and in detail about that. Exploring primitive societies of North and South America, Africa, Siberia and Australia, he was surprised at the fact that shamans' world outlook of different cultures was practically identical. They assert that there exists three worlds--upper, middle and lower - through which they can travel in their shifted state of mind, thatis in a state of trance. Undertaking their travels in the search for a force or some piece of information shamans used various techniques and tools; among the latter were music instruments like the buben and the vargan. The buben is a "Yan'"-type instrument. It serves for a collective meditation. The vargan is an "In'"-type instrument. It serves for entering a shifted state of mind. This concerns more a performer than his audience.
The essence of the vargan energy effect on a personargan is an "IN'"-type of the instrument
When you play the vargan, it radiates powerful vibrations. In your mouth cavity, in terms of physics, arises a standing wave. And you can tune the sounding of your vargan in such a way that it will resonate with your inner oscillations. Both the specific vargan setting and your particular performance accounts for this. You know that your brain generates three sorts of waves-alpha, beta, gamma. The sound waves of your vargan begin to coincide with your brain waves and, therefore, you get your shifted state of mind.
The world magically transforms and you start feeling, seeing and hearing the things you haven't perceived before. Everyone who takes to playing the vargan experiences this curious effect. And if you are not a novice at energy practising and know the shifted mind chart, the vargan helps you break into the upper world for Information, into the lower world for Force, and into the middle world for activities which remake your reality. Any human can learn to master the vibrations. You've got to learn it once, like in cycling or swimming , and then you'll possess it the rest of your life. It seems complicated at first sight. In fact, nothing of the kind. All you need is your desire to reach this. In my opinion, it is kind of energy competence.
The vargan wonders
Each time when the vargan finds a new master it changes his life in this or that way. Many buyers told me their fantastic stories. The vargan is a primitive instrument. In all it consists of two parts: a U-formed metal bar and a movable metal tongue, a vibrator. Nevertheless, it precisely serves for your self-expression, improvisation, interaction with the surrounding world. I have noticed that the instrument attracts and unites people. I enjoy travelling and one day at night I play my vargan sitting on the bank of a river. The vargan is not a loud instrument but the sound of mine was heard by my friends who were six kilometers away up the river.
Play, the vargan, play
I can give you the first lesson on vagran in 3-5 minutes so that you can master the basic playing and after 2-3 weeks of your regular trainings you will start playing in your ownoriginal manner. All you need is to select a vargan by its sounding pleasant to your ear. Buying a vargan ask a seller to play a few tunes to stop your choice at the instrument with your preferable vibrations. Then try and feel it pressing the U formed fork to your teeth so that a narrow gap can be seen between your upper and lower teeth, which will be enough for the vibrator to oscillate, and then pulling the vibrator. Listen to the sound appearing in your mouth cavity which serves as a resonator. Deliberately changing the volume of the cavity try to create a piece of music. At the advanced stage of your practice the other parts of your respiratory system can be included into the process of producing sounds - your throat or your diaphragm. There is even a fine technique when a performer creates vibrations with the tips of his lungs. The skills come to you with much practice, of course. Playing the vargan is similar to singing a mantra. When a mute inner mantra is combined with your vargan vibrations you can feel a curious sensation.
Make a unity with your instrument
Each vargan needs your special care. You should energetically become as closer to it as possible. My vargan, for instance, is always with me. It's in my pocket or somewhere at hand. It helps you understand its 'soul' and play it better. I have noticed one magic thing which I recommend a novice to try. If something is wrong when you start playing, never mind. Carry it with you in its case for some time. And I assure you that a day is enough for it to play in your mouth without your noticeable efforts.
Choosing your own vargan
The instruments we produce are presented in 12 models, 5 of which are BENT vargans. For them a thick metal bar is used. These models are tuned to the timbre of a human voice. With them one can demonstrate Tuvinskoye throat singing. HAMMERED vargans acquire the property of plasticity. As a result, such instruments have more powerful volume timbre. Hammered vargans are for the performances at ethnic music festivals and at shamans' hours. SIX EDGED vargans are partly hammered ones. They have sounding which is between the sounding of bent and hammered instruments. KAZAHSKIY vargan( or the homuz)sounds differently as its technology has another tradition. I represent instruments with Slavonic roots.
